Vision, Mission, & Goal Statements
“Where Children and Learning Come First”

Mission: Fidalgo School is committed to educational excellence. The staff has high expectations for students and believes all students can master basic academic skills and excel to the best of their abilities.

At Fidalgo, we individualize and adjust our instructional programs to better serve the unique needs of each child. Through the use of mastery teaching concepts and constant assessment of students throughout the learning process, we seek to ensure the success of every student.

In order to effectively foster this environment for our students we have developed a set of Operating Principles that govern how we as adults agree to treat one another.

Goals: Our school has recently completed the development of our 2006-07 School Improvement Plan. Our goals focus on helping all of our students succeed in the areas of math and reading:

Improve student knowledge and skills in reading & mathematics as measured by at least a 5% increase in the number of students meeting the standard on the Reading & Math WASL as compared with the same group of students two years later. For example, a 5% increase of the 2004-05 4th grade students meeting standard on the 2006-07 6th grade Math WASL.

Strategies: A variety of strategies will be used to achieve these goals, and action plans have been developed to implement each of these strategies:
-- Annually evaluate WASL results to measure progress toward the goals.
-- Investigate reasons students may not be meeting standard (effects of gender, poverty, etc.) and change or develop further interventions based on results and/or make changes to our program structures or system goals.
-- Analyze data to identify specific areas for remediation and support
-- Align our reading and math curriculum, assessment, and instruction both vertically (K-6) and horizontally (across content areas) with the GLE’s.
-- Preserve and protect instructional time for students
-- Increase student interest, motivation, and enthusiasm through programs such as Math Month, Building Connections with Kids noontime clubs, and the greenhouse, garden, and trail projects.
-- Improve student organizational skills, fundamental to school and lifelong success.
-- Target students not meeting standard for remedial support in reading and math.
--Maximize the effectiveness of para-ed support to serve these student needs.
--Raise awareness of health and nutrition issues and increase the level of student physical activity at school.
